Nuremberg is a 2025 American historical drama and psychological thriller directed and written by James Vanderbilt, based on the nonfiction book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai. It stars Russel Crowe as Hermann Goring, one of the highest-ranking Nazi leaders, and Rami Malek as U.S. Army psychiatrist Major Douglas Kelley.
The film is set in 1945-46 just after the end of World War II, during the famous Nuremberg trials where top Nazi officials are prosecuted for war crimes. Kelley is assigned to evaluate Göring and other imprisoned Nazi leaders to determine their mental fitness to stand trial and to assess suicide risk. As the courtroom proceedings approach, Kelley and Göring engage in a complex psychological battle – with Kelley trying to understand the mind of a man responsible for horrific crimes and Göring using his charm, intelligence, and persuasive rhetoric to unsettle his evaluator.
While the prosecution team – including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson (Michael Shannon) and British barrister Sir David Maxwell Fyfe — prepare legal strategy, Kelley’s work and growing entanglement with Göring’s charismatic yet chilling personality forces him to confront unsettling questions about evil, accountability, and justice.
The movie mixes courtroom drama with intense character study, culminating in Göring’s conviction and suicide before execution, and leaves viewers reflecting on the nature of human responsibility.
