King Philip II of France in James Goldman’s play The Lion in Winter is a fascinating character – young, clever, and far more calculating than he first appears.
Age & Appearance: Philip is only 18 years old during the events of the play (set in 1183), which makes him the youngest character on stage apart from John. Despite his youth, he is already King of France.
Philip is young but dangerous — a charming snake in the garden. He’s underestimated by the older, louder Plantagenets, but by the end it’s clear he’s one of the sharpest players in the game.
