Synopsis for Jane Austen’s Lady Susan
Adapted from Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan, Rob Urbinati depicts a “hothouse” atmosphere where characters arrive with little notice and the romantic entanglements continually shift as everyone adjusts accordingly.
Lady Susan confined by the restrictions placed upon women in the 1800’s, and recently widowed, finds herself searching for a suitable arrangement for herself and her daughter. Without a son and unable to receive an inheritance or property Lady Susan has no option but to resort to schemes and seduction to avoid poverty.
These are witty, complex characters facing things we can readily understand. While Jane Austen’s Lady Susan has indirect allusions to contemporary issues, the need to fight for equal footing still, unfortunately, remains true for women today.
