Sugarcane is a documentary film about the experiences of an Indigenous Community when, in 2021 unmarked graves were discovered at a Catholic run residential school near to the Sugarcane Reserve in BC.  After years of suppression, the forced separation, assimilation and abuse many children experienced at these segregated boarding schools was furthernexposed and provided greater focus on a national system that was designed to destroy Indigenous communities, their language and culture.  Sugarcane illuminates the beauty of a community breaking cycles of intergenerational trauma and finding strength to persevere.

Sugarcane is R rated due to due to challenging and/or triggering subject matter including discussions around child abuse, racism and colonial violence.

The Lanark County Neighbors for Truth and Reconciliation is sponsoring the showing of this documentary movie at the Studio Theatre in Perth.     The Lanark County Neighbors for Truth and Reconciliation is a volunteer community group that works to educate non-Indigenous people about the true history of Lanark County.  Lanark County is located on unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin People.       Under the direction of local Indigenous advisors, we strive to bring Reconciliation alive on a local level and lend our voices to support the struggles of Indigenous people in this region and across the country.
