Eleanor the Great is an American comedy-drama directed by Scarlett Johansson in her feature directorial debut. The story centers on Eleanor Morgenstein a spirited 94-year-old woman played by June Squibb, who is navigating life after the death of her best friend and longtime roommate, Bessie. Feeling lonely and sidelined by her busy family after moving to New York City to live with her daughter and grandson, Eleanor accidentally stumbles into a support group for Holocaust survivors at a Jewish community center and, rather than correcting the mistake, begins sharing Bessie’s harrowing experiences as if they were her own. That untruth draws the interest of Nina , a young journalism student grappling with her own grief, and sparks an unlikely, heartfelt friendship between the two women. As Eleanor’s story spreads, the lie grows harder to sustain, leading to personal and public consequences — but ultimately opens the door to healing, forgiveness, and deeper connections across generations.
