Audition DatesTuesday April 21 and Thursday April 23 at 7 PM sharp (doors open at 6:30) in the lobby of Studio Theatre Perth and Saturday April 25 at 10 AM sharp (doors open at 9:30 AM) at St. Paul’s United Church.

How to AuditionThe audition does NOT include a prepared monologue. There will be line reading from sections of the script and possibly other activities to demonstrate skills and willingness to collaborate and accept direction. During firefighting scenes actors will require physical dexterity – appearing to be crawling through burning buildings.

Play SMOKE AND MIRRORS by John Kenny
About the Play The play alternates between scenes from Brent’s memories as a firefighter in the 1970s and 1980s, and his hospital room, in the present. Though the play is broken into 18 scenes, the action is continuous between them. Brent goes through the entire play dressed in a hospital gown.

Cast required Looking For six actors able to portray men and two actors able to portray women (see specifics below)
  • Brent Preston – a retired firefighter in his mid 70s. He suffers from a brain tumor and haunting memories.
  • Jimmy – a firefighter, early 30s. He and Brent are crewmates and friends.
  • Lorraine – Brent’s middle-aged daughter, mother to a young man. Harried and a bit worn.
  • Sandy – the first female firefighter in the station. Experienced and competent. A young mom.
  • Capt. George – The Captain of Brent’s station. Mid 50s. He is old school, firm but fair.
  • Luis – a Latino hospital orderly
  • Devon – the senior firefighter on the crew. Mid 40s.
  • Dr. Carlson – Brent’s attending physician and surgeon.
Rehearsals Rehearsal schedule starting mid-August at St. Paul’s, and October 1 on stage at Studio Theatre.
Play Run 4 performances October 29-November 1, 2026 in Perth and 1 performance November 6 or 7, 2026 in Kanata as Studio Theatre’s entry in the EODL ONE ACT PLAY FESTIVAL.
